This project will support FishSCORE2030 – a UN Ocean Decade program co-led by the Gulf of Maine Research Institute and Environmental Defense Fund – in developing a practical framework to support fisheries managers in using climate information to plan and implement climate resilient fisheries practices around the world.
Many fisheries management bodies recognize the need to address climate impacts, and some have already begun planning for emerging risks. Yet, their ability to assess these impacts and use climate information to inform management actions varies widely. Furthermore, many management bodies lack clear and actionable guidance for moving from resilience planning to action.
This project will enlist a variety of research and engagement activities to develop a framework for translating climate information into action. Specifically, this project will:
- Identify climate resilience principles from existing literature and resilience and adaptation efforts that support planning and implementation within fisheries management;
- Engage fisheries managers, scientists, and rights holders to establish an evidence base for how climate information is incorporated into fisheries management processes and illuminate enabling conditions for achieving climate-resilient fisheries; and
- Develop and test a planning-to-implementation framework that integrates these principles and evidence to support fisheries managers in making climate-informed management decisions.
