This project will strengthen the capacity of managers and policymakers to integrate scientific, local and indigenous knowledge to advance climate resilient fisheries practices in fisheries management plans in Tanzania.

In Tanzania, there is a wealth of scientific and local knowledge on fisheries and climate change that is being underused in management and policies. This gap is exacerbated by additional governance and capacity challenges that undermine decision-makers’ ability to respond to rapid environmental change.

This project will fund the African Group of Negotiators Expert Support (AGNES) to implement a multistakeholder evidence-based approach to develop an action plan that embeds climate-resilient practices into policy and management systems. Specifically, this project will:

  • Assess knowledge gaps and opportunities to enhance climate-resilient fisheries management and policy;
  • Convene policymakers, fishing community members, managers, NGOs, and scientists to co-design and validate resilience strategies; and
  • Train managers and policymakers in applying scientific evidence and strategies in their management practices.

This project was funded in February 2026 as part of the 2025 Climate Resilient Fisheries Engagement Grants.
